to add to their coin collections (as they say “they ain’t making um an more”) because they are harder to come by than modern coins, makes them so collectible.
Old coins have become more valuable because of the value of the gold and silver they are made of.
Many old coins have been melted down because the value of the metals in them was worth more than value if they were used as money.
Since all coins are stamped between two dies, in a press, they have even more value than the metal content.
It is what was how the dies were made and care for that can and does make some old coins even more valuable and interesting to variety coin collectors.
Old coins become even more valuable as they get older.
As coins get older they become rarer as there is less around, which also adds to their value.

Unfortunately, silver coins are not easy to ocellct. Silver content is rather side effect for ocellctor: the coin may be a garbage quality, but noone will sell it to you for less than silver value. The only silver coins that I got for less than silver value are from the bank rolls. Rarely, you can find silver coin in a roll, esspecially old one. Also in US some people do not know that some silver coins were still minted after 1964. I am not sure how it was in Canada though. ANother thing, foreign silver coins not many people will know the actual silver content. So you may get lucky and get the coin for less than silver spot price. Hope this helps.
